A day of several parts
Bank Holiday Monday dawned bright and sunny, though with a little more wind than yesterday.
Just as we were getting ready for the short coastal path walk to Church Bay, there was a sudden call for help from the shower. J, one of the other grandparents in our group, had a sudden varicose vein burst, resulting in a lot of blood on the bathroom floor.
Prompt teamwork from Jack, Ruth and Jenny (J's daughter) stemmed the flow, with an expertly-applied improvised bandage (a clean tea towel and some microporous tape), along with elevating the leg. Marianna cleared up the blood. I got onto the NHS phoneline. J and her husband G were told to drive to the nearest hospital, in Bangor. They then had a very long wait in Accident and Emergency, but got good treatment and were back again late in the afternoon. Phew. As so many times before, thank goodness for the NHS.
While J and G were in Bangor, some of us walked to Church Bay and others paddled there in Jack and Marianna's kayak. We had lunch at the much-loved Wavecrest Cafe there, famous for its giant scones. Eben was very keen to try one, but even he couldn't eat it all (there were plenty of other takers to help him out).
Later I went for a swim, as the tide was coming in. I admit that I wore a wetsuit... the water temperature wasn't bad, but the wind was still keen. There were small waves to belly-surf on and with a few other people in the water, it felt relaxed and friendly. It's a very quiet bay (the extra was taken around 8 a.m. this morning).
