A Capital Day Out 2
Thank you all for your kind wishes yesterday. I had an early, slept and woke up feeling refreshed enough to head down to Edinburgh for our second day out at the Festival; stopping at Wren Kitchens on way to finalise kitchen design*
I'd been looking forward to Figures in Extinction - NDT are one of my favourite dance companies and I've enjoyed other works choreographed by Crystal Pite. It was also an interesting proposition - combining dance with spoken word. However I came away slightly disappointed (and in a very small minority feeling that way given the rapturous applause. It was staged in three pieces and I found the first interesting and thought provoking and beautifully danced. I loved the second piece - it was quirky, funny, moving and beautifully danced. The third piece too was beautifully danced but I found that the spoken word, which had worked well in first two pieces, detracted from what was happening on stage. For me one of the joys of dance is a freedom to interpret and derive your own meanings but here I felt we were being being firmly told what the relationship is between the living and the dead, a view which I didn't agree with. However it was certainly thought provoking and it prompted us to discuss all manner of things including the nature of arts and challenges and I am glad we went to see it and good to see another packed house for a dance production.
*All being well it will be installed first week in Nov :-).
