Six
In July 2021 we were offered a chance to see “Six” in Blackpool. But, it never happened as - for a variety of Covid related reasons - the tickets our friends had, had been cancelled and refunded and they should have re-booked. Unfortunately, by the time all this was spotted, the show was sold out.
Fast forward four years and I spotted that there had been a film made of the musical, and it was on at the Brewery Arts Centre Cinema this afternoon. So let’s go and see what all the fuss was about.
It’s one of those shows I’ve never been entirely sure about. The songs I’ve heard, I have liked. But it does have a bit of a reputation for rowdy audiences (a pet hate) sometimes. It originally started as a show at the Edinburgh Fringe, which explains the format - one act, sung through, with just the six Queens and their band onstage. No scenery, just lighting effects, upbeat songs and dance.
And I really enjoyed it. A very innovative way of re-telling the story of Henry VIII’s wives. Loads of energy throughout and some very catchy tunes. Now that I understand how the show works - more pop concert than traditional musical - I would like to see the show live sometime. It’s on in London and there is also a U.K. tour that has a few dates near us in the coming months so I’m sure it will be possible.
