Another successful ascent of The Wrekin.
After a good evening with the cousins we had a lazyish Sunday morning all bar a bit of hedge clipping for Christine before we headed off for Sunday lunch at a Wetherspoons. Not a bad deal and the food was OK.
To walk off the lunch we decided to conquer the Wrekin again. No idea how many times I've been up there. At the moment, it seems to be easy, but no doubt it'll get harder. My old Geography teacher is a regular on the Wrekin and aims to be the oldest person to reach the top. At 89 I can't imagine there are many people older than him who have reached the summit. I know he's been walking the Wrekin paths for decades as I recall seeing him on the track when I was 17, which is over 40 years ago.
Here we are on the summit, with the Needle's Eye behind us and the Severn Valley in the distance. The Needle's Eye is a chunk of volcanic rock that has been riven by a huge crack and used to be blocked by a chockstone. The tradition was to climb this crack and squeeze through the Eye around the chockstone, but in recent years the chockstone has been dislodged and the challenge has been much easier.
After a bit of cake and a restorative cup of tea we packed up and made our way back to Kent - a journey of 200 miles which we accomplished in 3 1/2 hours. Good going
