Red Admirable

Not a spelling error on my part, it's the name these butterflies were known by in Victorian times. I think that's rather nice.

This one was perched on a stone in a wall as walked back from the village this morning. It was clearly enjoying the sunshine as it had its wings spread out rather than folded upwards as they more usually do. I haven't seen one sitting still this year so I crept up carefully and took my photo before he flew off.
