Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.....
Today I decided to be creative and put together some 'favourite things' into a still life. I was rather pleased with the result.
Here we have two 1950's stainless steel thermos jugs which I cleaned from their dull sticky condition yesterday. They look gorgeous now. In front of them are some almonds in their velvet outer casing from the tree near Ali's house. Next to them are greengages, my absolute favourite type of plum, as sweet as sugar when they are ripe and so juicy. Sadly they only have a very short season.
The loaf of bread is what I used to call a milk loaf. We used to get them for a treat when I was a child. I loved that they were round and you could use the circles around the loaf to make a straight cut. I haven't seen one for decades.
The shop in Peebles where I bought this loaf called it a Lodger Loaf, I don't know why.. Not a term I'd heard before, but it was absolutely delicious and so soft . Still a treat even now that I'm not a child!
We headed down to Peebles at lunch time arriving at about 2pm. We hadn't any particular purpose, just to wander somewhere different. It was nice to see that St Peter's the Episcopal Church was open so we went in and had a look around. It has a leather covered and padded pair of doors at the front. I suppose to muffle the traffic sounds, most unusual.
There was some very pretty stained glass too with some very delicate paintwork on the faces, beautiful but I failed to take any pictures. I failed to buy anything sorry from my loaf. We headed back via Whitmuir but annoyingly missed the cafe there. I bought some cherry curd from the shop though and a rhubarb pie for dinner tomorrow.
After we got home I had some of the curd on my lovely fresh bread, it was delicious.
We watched the quizzes this evening, both teams which I preferred won. In between, we watched the first episode of Upstart Crow, I've never seen it before and laughed out loud several times.
