SCOUTS AT RA
It's GT World Challenge weekend at Road America and, as part of the events, RA hosted a large group of scouts who camped the weekend and had the opportunity to earn a merit badge as well (see Xtra). Unfortunately, I had a 180-600mm lens on the Z9 and I had to back all the way to the other side of the RA Center to get this shot. Maybe half of the scouts can be seen in this shot.

I'm not precisely sure what the merit badge is all about but it had mostly to do with Automobile Awareness, safety and the need for proper maintenance. As I recall, maintenance was one of the main themes. One of the local track mavens, and a friend of mine, brought in his race car (A Mini Cooper) which he drives under the name of Luke Warmwater. He's a retired insurance salesman so that might say something about his sense of humor. While the scouts gathered around he went through the maintenance procedures he uses on his race car. Then a technician from Ford? Chevy?....(can't remember) made additional comments about maintenance requirement for a car once they are old enough to drive and assume maintenance duties.

Several scouts there said they already help their fathers doing routine oil changes, keeping tires tyres properly inflated, checking coolant levels and things like that. I had to go elsewhere during the assembly so I'm not sure whether or not any "actual" maintenance was done by the scouts. There might have been some demonstrations but I'm fairly certain that insurance regulations would have forbid their doing anything potentially dangerous.

Now.....if only there weren't severe weather warnings and the rain downpour this afternoon it might have been a perfect weekend for the scouts. They are camped on high ground so I'm all but certain they won't float away in the night.

BTW...it should be noted that, in the U.S., they are referred to as Scouts and not Boy Scouts as in the past. Girls are allowed to join the scouting ranks and there were several in attendance.
