Quod oculus meus videt

The one that got away

A poor night's sleep. Woke at 1 am and didn’t get back off so headed first to the spare bedroom and then came downstairs, when sleep didn’t come. An early walk, where I saw these sloes on a blackthorn bush.

It could have been so much more interesting. I’d seen that the Red Arrows were overflying the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield at lunchtime. They were then due to transit about 2 miles north of our house. I planned to be under the flight path to get an image.

Imagine my surprise when I caught the TV as the Arrows overflew the Arboretum, an hour earlier than expected. Little time to react, I rushed to the car to get the camera, hoping I might just glimpse them in the distance. Wrong lens, I was changing as I heard planes above. Dumbfounded as 5 red planes flew less than a thousand feet above the house, followed by another 4. No photo possible, just the frustration and elation of seeing them fly right over me. So close.

The golf came and I started playing quite well, but almost inevitably, the second nine saw a fall off in performance. Lack of sleep catching up with me.
