The Assumption
You knew that didn't you - a big day for the BVM and I've been hurtling around the countryside visiting wells for many dedicated to the BVM have a patterns/mass on this day. First up my old favourite and local well just outside Bantry which had been decorated beautifully for the day - fresh hydrangeas and other flowers all over the place. Then on to Dunowen and a remote well overlooking a cliff - not a pattern I had been to before. The weather was warm, the atmosphere warm, jovial with a great mix of people from babes in slings, to little girls doing cartwheels to the more mature taking tentative steps across the fields. I felt unprepared- people were arriving with chairs, blankets, hats, water. Mass was conducted and then there was a rush for the well - bottles filled and cups drunk under the watchful eye of the BVM . Incidentally this is the well (first extra) where she is said to have taken the guise of a swan and , I'm guessing, assumed her human form and somewhere left her kneeprints, yet unidentified.
Running late and I have a big day tomorrow. catch up soon.
