A day in the life

By Shelling

We're back

Only four of the thirty though. My landlord, the cattle owner and carer has his cows on different grazing grounds during summer but four of them was in a field where there wasn't enough food for them so he brought them back to their winter home, the grazing fields around my house.

Normally, the cows isn't back here until end of September or early October but my landlord had to react on a special situation. Luckily, he planted a field with grass in the spring and that's where the cows are now. They have spent every minute of the day eating the fresh grass, they must have been hungry. There isn't enough grass here to feed all the cows during autumn, winter and early spring but he has plenty of food for them in the form of white plastic bales of pressed grass, called silage, that lasts a long time, there's a lot left since last year and he's got tons of the stuff from this year too. The best for the cows is to eat fresh grass in the summer season and for the rest of time, they're fine with silage.
Nice to hear them munching away nearby.
