Vardø

Steinbock_Travels Day 45
Heading further east. The weather was lovely in the morning, but clouded over, I had to find a jacket for the first time in weeks. First stop was Vadso on the Barents Sea, the far north east of Norway. We had a coffee, the man found there was a tour of a preserved w merchants house, and a Kwen Farm in the town. So much history, the Kven people from Finland settled there during the potato famine, happy to fish for the “white gold” or cod, they were, however a minority, and not so long ago the Finnish language wasn’t allowed in schools there.
We continued on to Vardø, further north, and amazingly the sky cleared and we had a beautiful evening parked at the harbour. We cooked dinner then began exploration of the butterfly shaped island. About half was military, with a radar station. Great views and lots to see, including lots of street art. A lot of very rundown buildings too,
