Lord’s Seat, Whinlatter
A grand day on the Whinlatter Fells despite the heat. Bagged 2 1/2 more Wainwrights.
The 7 1/2 mile circuit from Scale Force carpark took in Greystones, Broom, Lord’s Seat and Whinlatter. My, it was a fierce ascent up the face of Greystones alongside the wall, setting the scene for a day of over 2000 feet of ascent.
The views from the summits were amazing if a little hazy in the heat. We saw very few people, one coming down from Greystones and one on the summit of Broom. There were about half a dozen on Lord’s Seat and after that, nobody on Whinlatter. These out of the way fells are just perfect for August.
Why 2 1/2 Wainwrights I hear you ask? I had Whinlatter recorded as a summit in 2015 but I couldn’t be sure. When we reached the tops I was sure that we’d not been there. We even went over Brown How which Wainwright apparently regarded as the summit of Whinlatter on the way down.
Instead of going to the pub at the end of the walk we went back to the flat, had long showers and a beer or two, crisps and nuts while sitting back relaxed and clean.
A couple of houses have come up in Cockermouth, Vicarage Lane and Parklands. We’ve asked for viewings.
I forgot to mention that there were plenty of butterflies on the fells today; lots of red admirals, peacocks, commas, tortoiseshell and speckled wood and possibly a small white. Oh! And billions of flying ants
