Martha Pit Mine

This is the pump house used to get water out of the mines.
They mined gold and silver in Waihi. This pump house and the pit mine are no longer in use but mining is still going on underground.
Gold mining started in 1878.
The pump house was built in 1903 to house steam engines and pump equipment to extract water out of the underground mines. It was decommissioned in 1930.
It has since been moved 90 metres to preserve it because it was sitting on the edge of a mineshaft and the ground was unstable. It took 3 months using concrete tracks and Teflon pads and hydraulic rams.. It’s now a historic site sitting next to the Martha Pit mine (extra).
