Ring of Brodgar

We decided to go to the high points of the islands south of Kirkwall today, so went to Lamb Holm, South Ronaldsay, Burray and lastly Glimps Holm in the morning. In the afternoon we went to Gurness Broch before going to the Ring of Brodgar. When we first went to Orkney in the 1980s there were very few visitors to the historic sites you could go anywhere and rarely see a soul. Now that the sites are part of a World Heritage site they are (over) visited and there are restrictions to avoid wear and tear. A few years ago we couldn’t go into the centre of the circle but you could go round the stones, now the site is so worn out that you walk outside while the ground recovers. It’s not as good but maybe next time. The blip is a view of the stones in the afternoon light. We then went up the highest hill in Mainland where the extra looking towards Stromness was taken.

Best on black.
