Jougs
These hand behind a pillar at the old cemetary in Millport. Jougs were an instrument of punishment. The collar was placed round the offenders neck and fastened by a padlock. Time spent in the jougs was intended to shame an offender publicly. You can see in Millport you were strung up to the rocks...hopefully not too close to an incoming tide...
The word joys comes from the Latin jugum, meaning a yoke.
The old cemetary looks fascinating. As it was twilight I wasn't going to hang about but will return for an amble soon.
Stayed on the island tonight which is lovely. Making a day visit to the parentals tomorrow.
Had a splendid first week at work all in all. Got a lot to crack on with next week - poised ready to go! All good! I'm so happy with my move - I reckon I have gained about 12 hours a week by not driving to work or across the country at the weekend!! Invaluable.
