Lascaux 2
Day 12. We did a tour of Lascaux today. We first stopped off at Les Eyzies y to visit the National Museum of Prehistory (1st Sunday of the month is free entry) to give ourselves a primer. Sal and I had visited Lascaux about 35 years ago but we had three young children in tow, including Sian who professed no memory of it. For those of you unfamiliar with the caves they are the probably the best examples of prehistoric cave painting dating from 20 000 years ago and were discovered in 1940 by 4 teenagers while walking their dog found a tiny hole in the ground. It wasn't until after the war that the true significance of the caves was appreciated.
The caves were closed in 1963 when it was realised that the many visitors were causing a deterioration in the paintings which had been preserved for 20 000 years.
Lascaux 2 is an amazing and authentic replica of the original caves which can be visited with a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. I'd forgotten what a great experience it is to visit and was reminded how artistic and surprisingly modern the drawings are. Being 20000 years old we can only imagine and guess how and why they were created.
The first extra is Mrs GM with Sian and Tristan waiting for the tour to begin. We got back for some lounging around the pool and later we fired up the hot tub for some post supper relaxation. This was taken by Sian, so for once it includes me though I'm trying to hide under the water.
