Desiccated Apple

I've got dozens, if not hundreds, of these little things blowing around the garden. Initially I thought Ziggy was to blame! Closer inspection revealed the apple pips. The windfall apples must have desiccated in the hot weather. They are really lightweight and almost sponge-like in texture. I've never seen that happen before.
