Green River Views on a Perfect Summer Day

We've been having a few days of really spectacular weather. The days are sunny, hot in the sun in the afternoon, but cool enough in the shade, with pleasant breezes. My husband wanted to go for a jog and we had talked about a couple of options for where the night before. We agreed that with the lovely weather, a trip down along the river might be just the thing.

The Lower Trail, a 17-mile rails-to-trails trail, is tucked in along the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River. It can be accessed at many different trailheads, but the one closest to us is located at the flea market in Water Street. So we parked the car there and set out along the river, my husband jogging, myself walking, with camera, of course. The trail is flat and wide, with many benches along the way with fine river views. (You may see more photos here.)

There were quite a few bicycles on the trail on this day, so I did not put my earphones in, for safety's sake. I thought it best to be able to hear people coming up behind me so I could get out of their way. Of course, I had my pals the Moose, Tiny Tiger, and the Anteater in my daysack. We were all off on an adventure.

I put in about a four-mile round-trip hike on this day. My husband typically goes further than I do when he jogs, unless I'm on my bike, in which case, I am able to go fast and far. To be honest, I missed my bike. Zipping up and down the trail on a bike seems effortless. Walking seems to be a bit more work.

I sometimes see snapping turtles in one of the side creeks, but the water in them was muddy and I didn't spot any ancient reptiles. I did go up and down the banks to take photos in two or three spots, but I was mindful, and tried not to fall, like I did that one time. The mud along the banks is stinky and slick, and it can give way without warning. So please be careful if you go off-trail.

We had a great time, and enjoyed a fantastic summer afternoon! The high temp was around 70 degrees and you just couldn't ask for better weather! My soundtrack song is Creedence Clearwater Revival, with Green River.
