Quod oculus meus videt

Hopwas Woods

We decided on a walk today and after checking whether it was open, we headed for Hopwas Woods. It is close to Whittington Barracks and its rifle range. If shooting is taking place the woods are closed to the public despite there being a bridle path passing through the middle.

This area is where a large number of beech trees grow. I like it because, for whatever reason, no growth takes place on the floor of the wood under these trees. I must assume it has something to do with the beech trees but haven't 'Googled' it so far.

We then looped around to pick up the local canal, only to be caught in two heavy showers as we headed back to the car. One minute it was tipping down and then the sun came out and the vegetation steamed as the sun hit the leaves. We also noticed the ducks in the extra, this year's flock, which you can tell by the yellow beak, though they were no smaller than the mom that was still with them.

Afterwards we had a pootle around the shops, but didn't buy anything of note.
