The Limestone Way
Another lovely day, though not as warm as the past few days. We resurrected our Saturday plans, and headed into Buxton for a wander and a look around. We checked out the pump room, the Crescent, the Pavillion, the Opera House, the gardens, Scriveners, and also a couple of ‘well dressings”. We then picked up some sandwiches, and headed to Monyash.
We had our lunch by Fere Mere, watching nature in action, which involved crows and baby moorhens. The mother was doing a great job of keeping the crows at bay, but for how long?
Our walk started on The Limestone Way and was very pleasant. We continued until we reached an interesting farm, dating from the 12th century. Once past that we had a step descent down into Cales Dale. I slipped a couple of times, which was unfortunate as it was a very long way down. Thankfully I didn’t slip far!!
At this point we joined two walks together, and had a very steep ascent out of the gorge. The route then took us mainly across fields, many of which contained cows, my worst nightmare. I survived and was pleased to end up in a sheep field. We then descended into Lathkill Dale, before ascending (steeply of course), to the village of Overhaddon, we wandered around, then it was back down to Lathkill Dale, a narrow dale/gorge. We walked along the gorge, which took us back to Monyash. The weather became very grey and the gorge became quite imposing and you really felt like you were miles away from civilisation, and I was wondering how much further it was. We bumped into a DoE group, who asked for some help to make sure they were on the right route. They were, and didn’t have far to go to reach their destination. By the time we got back to Monyash the sun was out again.
We had a quiet evening.
This is TT on the Limestone Way. The extras are of Lathkill Dale, of which I didn’t take many pictures, a peacock and a grotto at the interesting farm.
