Luke Jerram: Mars

We viewed this installation of Mars at The Open University in Milton Keynes as a part of the annual International Festival in MK.

We also attended an event where Luke (the artist) spoke about how he combines his art background with principles of science and engineering to create such installations. He has created similar installations of moon, sun and earth (blue marble).

This is the description of the installation from the website. Some extras too to capture the event and the atmosphere .

Imagine gazing down upon the stark beauty of Mars.

Luke Jerram’s touring artwork, Mars, makes this possible. This expansive seven-metre sphere uses detailed 120dpi NASA photographs to bring the red planet to life. At a scale of 1:1 million, each centimetre on the internally illuminated surface corresponds to 10 kilometres on Mars.

The artwork offers a unique aerial perspective, allowing you to study the intricate details of Martian valleys, craters, volcanoes and mountains as if you were orbiting.’
