Teasel and hover flies (and other flies)

We visited Mirehouse gardens and house today. Both were very worthwhile. The gardens are open every day but the house only twice a week.

The gardens were understated really but abuzzing with insects all over the place. The herb garden was particularly swarming.

We enjoyed the house too, light and airy with lots of photos and mementos from generations of the same family who have lived there since 1680. The current owner, John Spedding, was ensconced in a chair in one of the rooms chatting to people and his daughter in law was at the entrance meeting and greeting.

A lady was playing the piano in the drawing room and two other ladies were demonstrating lace making in another room. We had quite a chat with them all.

From the house we followed a footpath down to and along Bassenthwaite lake, largely disguised by trees ending up eventually at St Bega’s Church which is quite remarkable place in a lovely position. See extra

This evening we met up with blippers TrevEarthy and Biblinros for a pub meal at the Bitter End. A very enjoyable evening learning more about all aspects of Cockermouth, upcoming events and gaining insights as to the different residential areas. Biblinros has now become our agent, searching for houses, keeping her ear to the ground on our behalf.
