Clan Crusader

SUNDAY

I propelled myself back to the 1970s today with a visit to the Clwyd Practical Classics Car Show in the nearby town of Caerwys.

Back in the 1960s and '70s, my dad always bought Rootes Group cars—Hillman Minx, Singer Vogue, Hillman Hunter, and the like. My first car was a one year old 1975 Hillman Imp.

I spotted both a Vogue and a Minx at this morning’s show, but sadly, no Imps.

However, I did come across a real gem: a 1972 Clan Crusader. This British sports car features a fibreglass monocoque body and is based on running gear from the Imp. Now over 50 years old, this example was in pristine condition.

The proud owner, Terry, told me it still had its original Coventry Climax–inspired, rear-mounted 875cc engine with its twin carbs and oil cooler. Amazingly, it's now covered 208,000 miles. Terry had driven it all the way from his home near Wrexham—unlike some of the other classics, which arrive on trailers.

I bumped into a few friends and neighbours at the show, including John and Bernadette. John was marshalling and was also exhibiting their Mazda MX-5 (see extra).

Another unbearably hot day!
