a lifetime burning

Common as muck

I always feel sorry for the Common Darter, fancy being saddled with a name that suggests that you are nothing special, when any careful view would recognise what a miracle of bioengineering you are.  I suppose that "frequently occurring darter" is a bit of a mouthful, but even so.

This one has come up from the little pond this morning.  Its just flown to this iris leaf, and clearly was a little bit non-plussed by the whole flying thing as it was prepared to allow me to get close enough for this shot with a macro lens, without showing any signs of distress.  Sometimes when the insect can obviously see you they try to scuttle off around the back of the leaf to get away from the perceived threat, but this one seemed quite happy to have its portrait taken.

Many thanks to JDO for her hard work in curating this month's Tiny Tuesday challenge.
