The Garrison

The Garrison was known as The Garrison House and was constructed in 1745. It was formerly the barracks / Captains’s mansion and then the home of the Earl of Glasgow. It was badly damaged after an arson attack in 2001 when the Cumbrae Community Development Company made a successful bid to National Lottery and other funders to enable the building to be reconstructed for community benefit. The works were completed in 2008 and include The Museum of the Cumbraes, a library, council offices, the Garrison garden cafe and the GP surgery - which is where I was off to today to have my gammy leg dressing changed. Healing nicely thank you!

More of interest is that the Commonwealth baton's handle is made of elm wood sourced from the grounds of Garrison House and is constructed using a boatbuilding technique called bird-mouthing, which means it is light, strong and durable.

So much in the news about my island at the moment - all good!
