Rough

We found this fossil in a rough pile of rocks in the garden. Neither of us knows where it came from.

When I took this macro shot of it, it seems like you can see the actual shell of the creature (ammonite?) rather than it being fossilised. I’ve been looking on the internet and can’t find anything to confirm this but if anyone knows what it might be I would be grateful for any information.
