Grumpy Old Man

Runnymede and Lucy Fisher

Probably warmer today than yesterday! My sister and I went out for an hour or two this morning to the café in the Woodland Garden in Bushy Park where I used to work - the Woodland Garden, not the café! A drink and a snack, then I went for a wander for old times' sake. The maintenance is poor compared with the early 1970s and a gardener I met told me that the current management knew nothing and cared less!

Back in time to be picked up by my brother and his son and we set off for Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed by King John back in 1215. We had a wander along the riverbank then a 45 minute boat ride on the fake stern-wheeler 'Lucy Fisher' - my Blip today - which gave us a cooling breeze! A detour afterwards to see the ruins of the nearby Ankerwycke Priory. It was a Benedictine nunnery, founded around 1160 and dissolved in 1536. The remaining ruins are on the north bank of the River Thames, across from Runnymede. The site is known for its historical significance, including its association with the Magna Carta and the ancient Ankerwycke Yew tree.

Then back to Hampton and out to dinner with my nephew and his wife. A warm but interesting day!
