JUST A BIT COMPLEX!

It's Trans Am weekend at Road America and I was walking through the TA paddock looking for something interesting to shoot.  This tech was rebuilding the gearbox on Amy Ruman's car (a C7 Corvette) ...she's a VERY good driver and a two-time Trans Am champion.  Here's a Wiki link to Amy Ruman:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Ruman

He does this often...in fact, a rebuild is necessary for every track they visit.  He learns from year-to-year about hills, fast straights, curves, etc. and that dictates which gearing he will use.  He's been doing this for 37 years if I recall what he said correctly.

I watched him for 40 minutes selecting gears from a tray and fitting them in seamlessly with the precision of a robot.  He was amazing to watch and I think he was enjoying the attention I was giving him.  The man is a gearbox wizzard.

He was worried about the strong wind blowing dust, etc. into the works.  Apparently, that little extra bit of friction can cause any manner of reliability issues.  Above my pay grade...but fascinating to think about.

I asked him which gear lube he used.  Exclusively Mobil 1, 75W-140 was the answer.

BEST IN LARGE.
