The Tiger on the Window
I could not get a good picture from the event we have been to in Appleby this evening, so here is an image that caught my eye from where I was sitting in 7Seventy where we came to eat afterwards. I liked the way you could see the original lettering on the wall of what was the old doorway when this was a traditional Family Grocer. Now it’s a wonderful Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant - superb food, beautifully plated and very professionally served. We are lucky to have this place in Appleby.
The event we were at earlier was a fascinating talk, organised by Lancaster University, and given by the two professors who discovered an original Magna Carta which once belonged to Appleby. The find was in the news in May but here was the full story of how this extremely important document, dating from 1300, was discovered and proved to be an original and how it came to be where it is now - in Harvard Library, having been sold to them for a few pounds in the 1940s. An excellent presentation given to a packed Hall - local people and many from Lancaster University. Look up ‘Appleby Magna Carta’ if you want to know more.
