Workshop
Today I got up promptly and got to the Informatics Forum by 10:00 where И, and I put prepared for the arrival of participants at the HiGHS workshop. Fortunately there was plenty of time to lay out piles of teeshirts and badges so the we could register people efficiently. Although I'd been in charge of the preparation, once people arrived they wanted to talk to me, and И took over the practicalities. A shortage of talks meant that we didn't start until after lunch, but those who arrived early were happy to chat amongst themselves. We knew we were bringing together people who had plenty to discuss at all levels - from technical experts to those working on applications - but it was good to see it play out for real.
After my introduction and review presentation, we had rather more technical talks today: tomorrow they are more applied. I walked slowly over to dinner with a former PhD student who had much to discuss in confidentiality, so most of the rest had arrived at Scotts on Victoria Terrace by the time we arrived.
Dinner was excellent - due to a better venue and slightly smaller numbers - and afterwards many of us went over to the Bayes Centre where the students attending had been eating pizza and playing board games. I set up a game of Catan with my PhD student Y, another PhD student from our group and a visitor. After a few breaks when I had to go down to swipe people our, the game was win by our visitor. Clearly people had appreciated the talks and had a great evening, so it was a satisfying day.
