Mystery critter

About the size of a Bumble Bee this insect has appeared in the garden on a couple of days this week. I'm not sure of its identity but guessing it might be a beetle, so any help in naming it would be appreciated.

The extra,  a Hypericum ( St John's Wort) growing  in Daughter and SiL's garden in Dawlish captured on my visit today. A very sunny , warm, and breezy afternoon, after leaving home  with drizzle this morning.
