Correfocs
After another twelve hours on the road, we arrived back safely late in the afternoon. There are midsummer festivities as it is the feast of Saint Jean. The fire will be lit on top of.Canigou and those who have climbed the mountain from each of the surrounding villages will bring down a flame to light a fire in each village square. Tonight it was the turn of the fire dancers. Correfocs, means "fire-runs" in Catalan, and is a vibrant Catalan tradition involving a parade of people dressed as devils who run through the streets, accompanied by the rhythmic drumming of tabalers and the lighting of fireworks and firecrackers. This energetic and chaotic spectacle is a key part of many Catalan festivals, symbolizing the fight between good and evil. The very loud drumming band could be heard all over the village to accompany the pyrotechnics. As it had been a long day, I did not wait to see the final lighting and parading of the dragon.
