Into the hills
An earlyish start and down to Bampton to tick off a few more Birketts
(lake district fells over 1000ft high)
The far eastern fells around Haweswater are a quiet part of the lakes especially if you avoid the western end of Haweswater where the popular hills are.
Much of the area to the south is managed by RSPB, today we walked and stumbled through bog in a few places for 7.6miles and 1400 feet of ascent. It was glorious apart from the horse flies which appear impervious to any insect repellent and only respond when given a sharp crack over the head with OS Explorer Map OS5.
We "bagged" another 4 Birketts : Harpers Hills, Powley's Hill, Scalebarrow Knott and Hare Shaw (blip) They were not especially dramatic but sometimes being out in the wilds is all that matters.
Skylarks were at full volume as usual, we watched a female Whinchat with two offspring cruising around from rock to rock (extra) and a new butterfly spot for me the Small Pearl-Bodied Fritillary, slightly damaged but still going strong...
...a bit like me
