Pass the lubricant?

       I read, recently that - "New cars in Europe are getting 1 cm wider every two years, on average."   IF this has gone on since "Ah was a lad."  They're now 30cm ≈ 1' wider than they were when I was early 20s.
       There is little/NO doubt that the so-called "Mini" is now vastly bigger than the Minis we whizzed about in.
       I Parked down town recently and, on checking, we were both fairly centrally parked - BUT - I was unable to open my door "to the first click"
SO
       I'll hazard a guess that Car-park spaces are not keeping pace?
