Orage électrique et inondation des routes
Pau
6 hour drive from the Spanish Coastline up to the Somport Tunnel at Can Franc in 35Deg sunshine. As soon as we hit the Pyrenees the temperature dropped.
Sky turned black, temperature dropped from 30deg to at one point 14deg and the heavy rain started with a spectacular lightning show and large hailstones which we thought would damage the car bodywork.
A last leg of the drive from Oloron-Sainte-Marie to our hotel in Pau would normally be 45 minute over the mountains but the drive turned into a 2 hour (bit of a) nightmare with road floods, heavy lightening making ground contact, trees down over the roads and eventually having to shelter under a small viaduct close to a van and another car when the marble size hail stones started.
We stayed under the little viaduct for 20 minutes then decided we had to make a dash across Pau to the hotel.
Always variable weather in the French Pyrenees ...and always rains in Pau!
