a lifetime burning

Beetles about

I'd like to be able to tell you which beetle this is, but I haven't been able to find one quite like it anywhere in on line references.  So I'm just going to settle for calling it an orange and black one.

The pond has produced another migrant hawker this morning, but unfortunately it is quite windy and I'm pretty sure that its wings got quite badly damaged before they hardened off.  Sadly, it chose the wrong leaf stem to climb up and was left in the wrong spot for the weather conditions.   There's sadly nothing that I can do to help it, and I'm not sure that it's even going to be able to fly.  Either way, I'm sure that it will provide a tasty meal for something else in due course.  Nature is like that.
