Ringinglow at dusk
Saturday began with a large cuppa and video natter with Ms.Bestie, comparing notes on weather affecting our respective locations. Whilst initially reporting "a bit grey but not bad on the whole", my weather report had to be upgraded shortly after to "It's chucking it down..." * pointed camera to the window * "...Look!"
Thankfully the precipitation didn't last and the car was taken to the tip/recycling facility to remove some large pieces of cardboard, a beyond economical repair garden strimmer, and the worn rear tyre off Biscuit.
Eldest arrived home in the late afternoon. She had spent the previous night at a friends house after they had attended a concert at Heaton Park to the north of Manchester. Am much too old to remember who the main act were but did remember that they were supported by James, a band more of my era.
Quite late on with a frazzled head I decided to go for a bimble and eldest came along for the ride. We popped over the Snake Pass and beyond to find Ringinglow Road high above Sheffield. I had wanted to visit there after learning that The Humber Bridge and Lincoln Cathedral may be visible in clear weather. Obvs the latter wouldn't be in the encroaching darkness but the Humber Bridge was a possibility, having red lights on its two towers to warn aircraft. Unfortunately we couldn't see what we were looking for (it should be somewhere above where eldest is pointing), either from a layby or from the Norfolk Arms car park a little further downhill, but the view was nevertheless impressive and we will hopefully return again in better conditions.
To ride back to our side of the hills I decided to take what should have been the safer route, down into Sheffield city centre and north to find the A627 Woodhead Pass. Heading down from the summit on the Manchester side was shall we say 'very dodgy' with resurfacing works having been in progress. The surface had been scrabbled in random patches for 5 miles or so making grip feel very tenuous in places, less than ideal when lit by a single headlight and whilst carrying a passenger but at least it was dry I guess!
We kept the speed right down to 30mph and got home safely for a late late cuppa, a few messages with Ms.Bestie beyond the 'bongs and Zzz.
