Abdon Burf
Its my turn to lead the hill walkers at the end of the month so today we did a reconnaissance walk. Our ten mile route took us up and over the twin summits -Abdon Burf and Clee Burf - of Brown Clee, the highest hill in Shropshire, as well as visiting Nordy Bank Iron Age hillfort. The legacy of its industrial past is still to be seen on Brown Clee which was the highest coalfield in England. Limestone and dhustone were also quarried here and my blip today shows the remains of one of the limestone processing works. Brown Clee is also the site of more wartime air crashes than any other hill in Britain. We visited the small remote memorial erected in 1981.
