The Lune

To Kirkby Lonsdale this morning for a retirees walk - six friends and colleagues I used to work with. I was surprised it only took me just over 20 minutes to get there.

I anrrived early, parking close to the Devils Bridge (extra). This crossing of the River Lune is ancient - the first written record of it is in 1365, and that is about repairs. Brilliant medieval engineering. I had a walk around what is a lovely town, before heading to the Lunesdale bakery for our agreed rendezvous point. And cup of coffee.

Then it was off for our six mile walk, with a lunch stop in the churchyard at Whittington. All very convivial. We returned to Kirkby Lonsdale and the bakery for teas and cakes. The only hitch on the walk is that G’s black lab Luna (appropriately named for this walk) absolutely refused to budge from just beyond the bakery, so she had to join us later - with Luna, who had evidently relented.

The blip is a view of the Lune from a point just beyond St Mary’s churchyard at Kirkby Lonsdale. In the far distance, the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.
