IS IT ME OR DO THURSDAYS COME ROUND...
...more quickly than they used to? I was pleased that I had no ill effects overnight and today from my Covid jab yesterday because I was quite poorly after my last one and my arm ached for days, but this one has been fine.
Just as well, because we were very busy at the Community Fridge this morning. We had lots of produce and bread that came in quite late, so it was “all hands to the pump” and we were even late praying, in fact, we didn’t open the doors until about 11.03 by which time some customers were knocking on the doors. Mind you, some of them had been queuing for over 2 hours, so it’s understandable.
We had lots of flowers this morning and you can see some of them in my collage. Many of the bunches were from M & S and some, like these peonies, and several bunches of roses were originally £20 - so we were pleased to see that most of them went. I remember one man always used to choose some for his wife, which I always thought was very sweet, as I’m sure if money was tight, food would have been much better, but the fact he wanted to take her flowers was lovely, in my opinion.
You can see we still have lots of potatoes but also plenty of other fruit and vegetables, as well as chicken burger rolls, most of which went like “hot cakes”, even thought they weren’t cakes, and today there was lots of potato salad too. I’m amazed at how many people take packets of crisps - and there is a limit of 2 per person on them - but I guess if you don’t have much money, you would tend to spend it on the essentials and in that case, crisps are a luxury and not a necessity.
I had the job of sorting out lots of tomatoes at the end of the session, and making sure they were good enough to last until Monday, which is the next time the Community Fridge is open. Quite a few looked worse for wear but there were a lot that weren’t actually "off" but they were split, so I’ve brought them home and will make more tomato soup with them and probably give some away to our neighbours. It saves wasting them, is a good neighbourly thing to do and also saves them going into landfill.
A busy morning but a good one and I was able to chat to quite a few of the customers, which is really what it is all about, the food being a conduit for our chats to those who are finding life difficult.
As I still can’t drive, I went on the bus again today and Mr. HCB comes to collect me just after 2 o’clock - and is then usually roped in to carry some of the heavy stuff out to the storeroom. We delivered a Bag of Hope on the way home and once I have finished this, I am going up to have a shower and will then relax for the evening.
