Unusual habitat

I saw the unusual sight of a great spotted woodpecker on our lawn this morning. It’s not that unusal to see green woodpeckers on the lawn, pecking away at the grass for whatever morsel they fancy, but I’ve never seen a great spotted woodpecker do it before.

After he’d spent some time pecking away, he finally flew off up into the ash tree, which is where I’m much more used to seeing him. He usually sits there after he’s helped himself from the peanut or suet pellet feeders nearby.
