Swan Lake
We started our day with breakfast at Wilson Street Pantry, a very popular small cafe in the Merchant City, so popular that we would have had a long wait if T and C hadn’t had the forethought to book a table. Fortified with coffee and delicious food, we ventured forth (first extra, approaching the gallery of Modern Art) into the various shops where one or other of us wanted to make a purchase or do some research. Amongst other things, we helped K to narrow down her choice of settee in John Lewis, and in M&S we found a very pretty crochet jacket for T to wear with her outfit for her nephew’s wedding. Much fun was had along the way before we got down to the serious business of the ballet. The focus of our weekend away was to go to the Theatre Royal to see a matinee performance of Matthew Bourne’s “Swan Lake”.
What a performance! It was amusing, it was tragic, and involved every emotion in between. The cast were not just excellent dancers, they were also very talented actors. They made us laugh, they surprised us and has us on the edge of our seats, reducing us to tears at the end. It was wonderful and we were still discussing it several hours later.
We continued our exciting day with a meal at Kelp then caught the subway (second extra) back to the side of the city where our accommodation was.
