Central Link Bridge, Merthyr Tydfil

“True teachers use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own.”
Nikos Kazantzakis
A Walk Through Merthyr
On from the River Walk footbridge to the Central Link Bridge, because the arch has a sinuous charm and beauty, too often neglected in urban developments when the bottom line is…well, the bottom line. It was part of the town’s (£24m) regeneration project in 2014, and it seems to be standing the test of time because to me it still looks good. The iconic arch feature will perhaps be looked back on in years to come as a design feature of this period in ‘history’. It was intended to be something other than just a typical highway bridge, utilitarian and functional and fortunately there was funding from not only the Welsh Government but also that long forgotten source, the European Regional Development Fund. A fuller story about the bridge and its’ construction is at https://www.steelconstruction.info/River_Taff_Central_Link_Bridge,_Merthyr_Tydfil
