The Lark Ascending
I confess it’s yet another rose photo today, I just can’t help myself.
I was at our local nursery by 9.00 am to buy some bedding plants for the two tubs in our back garden, and was also on the lookout for a rose bush to replace one that died over the winter. It was in a spot in our front garden near the vibrant peach-coloured Just Joey rose. I thought another peachy-coloured rose would be ideal, because there’s also a yellow rose nearby, so the three roses would complement each other. I was only looking, though, because I didn’t want to rush the decision.
And then.
And then I saw this beautiful David Austin rose in the distance, and knew immediately it was the one for me. I was even more sure when I looked at its name (I’m a sucker for rose names as well as the roses themselves!) and saw that it’s called The Lark Ascending. And of course Ralph Vaughan Williams’ beautiful piece of the same name for solo violin and orchestra was inspired by George Meredith’s 1881 poem.
Roses, poetry and music. What a glorious combination!
