Nursing home stairs

These are the stairs in Clive's nursing home. Goodness knows how many times I've been up and down them! (There are two lifts but I've never been in them as they're there for the less able. )
They have different brightly coloured carpet on each step because it makes them far more visible for the residents who have dementia, and therefore significantly improves safety.
There are many  things in place which help the residents eg no rugs (rugs especially dark ones, can make someone with dementia very scared as it can look like a hole in the floor - I removed all rugs from our house when Clive was still at home). Also there are very few mirrors in the communal areas - one home that Clive was in for a couple of months when he first came out of hospital had mirrors everywhere and then they said Clive was scared to walk down the corridor. When I suggested they move the mirrors they thought I was joking. I removed several from his room there myself, and the ones I couldn't move I covered. When he saw himself in the mirror he thought it was a stranger staring at him.
Dementia is very different to how many people imagine it to be.
