River Walk footbridge, Merthyr Tydfil
“Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here.”
Sue Monk Kidd
A Walk Through Merthyr
Opposite Merthyr College, just below the weir, is the entrance to the River Walk footbridge with its Banksy-style artwork, slightly weathered now but still striking. The artist is unknown apparently, beyond the initials RVK, and there are a few other works spread around the town. Like Jackson’s Bridge and Joseph Parry’s Cottage, they are part of the story of the town. Another local artist, Penry Williams, documented the landscape and industrial growth for Ironmasters like Cyfarthfa’s William Crawshay in the nineteenth century, leaving a legacy giving important insight into life and industry at that time.
