Chaos in the cellar
Shortly after breakfast I thought I'd start my work day by putting the beer away in the cellar, and removing the empty bottles stored there.
However, once I started moving things around I realised the outside far leg of the large shelves was thoroughly rotten and needed replacing (the one under the drill). To do that I needed to move a lot of stuff so everything is a bit chaotic. Having fixed that front leg I took this picture, and then crawled under the shelf to check the back leg - Oh dear - see extra! After that I looked at the other legs carefully, and the cross pieces, and realised I had a big job on my hands!
This part of the cellar is not waterproof, and when there's a lot of rain or melting snow a large puddle forms on the floor. It's always damp. A good environment for beer and wine but not so healthy for wood. It's around 20 years since we last replaced some parts of the shelves and it's time for a big renovation.
The rest of the day went to removing almost everything from the shelves, setting up some temporary legs to take the strain, and then prising off the more rotten sections. There was a lot of cleaning up to do as I went along. That's about as far as I got. Tomorrow I start the rebuild.
Some treasure was (re)discovered. As I cleared everything out I found an extra brewing bucket I'd forgotten I had. There were three beer kits, 15 years past their "best before" date, but experience tells me they'll be fine to use. I even found a whole box of empty beer bottles hidden away at the back. Those, and a few boxes of empty wine bottles were all moved to the barn, as in the original plan.
The newly brewed beer is still waiting in the outer section of the cellar. So much for the quick job putting it away before I got out into the garden!
