Lord Kitchener

This poster, that has served as a template for any number of promotional purposes, has its origins in the First World War. The military  gentleman with a bushy moustache is Lord Kitchener, a former Field Marshall who was the Secretary of War and spearheaded an army recruitment campaign. The original 'Lord Kitchener wants you (to serve your country)' poster dates from 1914.  It has taken on an iconic status since then and was particularly prevalent, as I recall, in the 'swinging 60s' when it was adapted to promote Carnaby Street fashions. The 'keep calm and carry on' messaging from the 2nd World War has become more prevalent in recent years as a promotional and ironic medium, so it was something of a surprise to see this poster in the window of a Balham estate agents yesterday. Lord Kitchener rides again!Ironically, given his namesake's colonial military service, 'Lord Kitchener' was the stage name adopted by a Jamaican calypso singer who travelled to London on the Empire Windrush in 1948 and was famously filmed on arrival at Tilbury Docks singing 'London is the place for me' .
