Mary Queen of Scots casket comes to Stirling

Great excitement in the Smith Museum and gallery today for Mary Queen of Scots casket was on show to the public for the first time in Stirling.  It will remain here (see extra) until the end of August before continuing its journey.

Mary Queen of Scots is an iconic and controversial figure in Scottish history spent her early life at Stirling castle from 1543 to 1548.
She was crowned Queen at nine months old. Later she returned to the castle on several occasions after her return from France including in 1566 for her son’s christening.

Speaking about the casket Dr Anna Groundwater, National Museums Scotland said:
“This extraordinary casket has been venerated as a relic of Mary, Queen of Scots for centuries, and I’m delighted that more people will now have the opportunity to see it up close.
Beyond its connections to one of Scotland’s most famous figures, it is a rare and spectacular piece of historic silver in its own right.”
