Please Don’t Bend
The Shoulder Press/Lat Raise machine in the gym has developed an issue whereby the supports for the Lat Raise arms have started to bend - probably due to the arms being dropped on to the supports rather than lowered in a controlled manner. People attempting too much weight perhaps?
Something needed doing though, as a tiny crack had developed in one of the welds. I contacted my friend Dan, who is a blacksmith and metal fabricator to see if he could help, rather than a replacement cross piece having to be ordered. He could, and Curt (gym owner) gave the go ahead for him to come and take away the offending part for repair. He will realign the supports, repair the tiny crack and - most importantly - weld in a couple of gussets to prevent any future reoccurrence of the issue.
I forgot to take any pictures whilst the offending parts were being removed, so I’m using one of the photos I sent to Dan originally, complete with arrow pointing to the suspect area of weld!
It should all be back in place by the end of next week and the machine can still be used to shoulder press in the meantime. And if I should have an urge to do lateral raises (unlikely, but let’s not rule it out), they will have to be done using good old-fashioned dumbbells…
